Trail Work & Volunteering

Our backyards are filled with thousands of miles of singletrack, it’s a big draw to living in the Sierras. These trails allow us access to the mountains, forests, and lakes that we are surrounded by. Along with endless miles of trails, comes a seemingly endless amount of work and maintenance that goes hand in hand.

This work falls onto our local trail maintenance and advocacy groups, these organizations are the grease that keeps everything running. Despite having over six different groups putting impressive amounts of time and energy into our trail systems every year, they can’t do it alone. It isn’t possible without help from the community. This help is hugely important and comes in a number of different forms from volunteering on trail work days, to attending meetings, to making charitable donations.

The main groups building and maintaining trails in our area are the Sierra Buttes Trail Stewardship, Tahoe Area Mountain Bike Association, Truckee Trails Foundation, Truckee Dirt Union, Tahoe Rim Trail Association, and the Truckee Donner Land Trust. On each of these group’s websites you can find information about projects and events, email registration to stay in the know about dig days, and donation pages. You can also reach out and report maintenance issues that need attention.
